Teesside University has been recognised for its commitment to supporting veterans and members of the armed forces.
The university has been given the Silver Award in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme for its work to support service personnel and their families.
In order to receive the award, the University signed the military covenant pledging to acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect and should not be disadvantaged by their service.
In addition, the University demonstrated that it employed members of the armed forces community and that it supported members of the workforce who are reservists.
Teesside University Business School also hosted an Employer Engagement Symposium in November 2018 which brought together business people from across the region to explore ways in which they could benefit the North of England Armed Forces Business Forum.
The symposium attracted several representatives from several key companies, including PD Ports, Caterpillar, AV Dawson and Komatsu, where they shared best practice and explored ways in which they could support service personnel and encourage others to sign the Armed Forces Covenant.
Juliet Amos, Executive Director of HR at Teesside University said: “Service personnel can bring a wealth of talent and experience to an organisation so we’re proud to support them by signing the Military Covenant.
“We are delighted to have received the Silver Award in the Employer Recognition Scheme as it underlines our commitment to ensuring that veterans and their families are treated fairly and the value they can bring to a business is recognised.”
Commenting on the announcement of the 2019 Employer Recognition Scheme Silver awards, Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace said: “These awards recognise the outstanding support for our armed forces from employers across Britain and I would like to thank and congratulate each and every one.”
Minister for Defence People and Veterans Johnny Mercer added: “Veterans make a huge contribution to businesses across the country and it’s fantastic to see a record breaking number of organisations recognised for their support.
“We’re working closely with businesses to help them further understand the huge value that veterans, reservists and military spouses can bring to their organisation.”
Professor Jane Turner OBE, pro vice-chancellor for research and business engagement, said: “We are hopeful that our Silver Award achievement will encourage and inspire other employers to get involved in this hugely important agenda, in essence, supporting and showing commitment to our armed forces.”
