Stockton Council is in the running for three prestigious awards after scooping a hat-trick of successful nominations at the national Social Worker of the Year Awards 2018.

The awards are open to all qualified social workers in England who have made a difference through their outstanding work with adults.

Service manager Peter Smith has made the final shortlist for the Lifetime Achievement category.

Peter has worked in social care for more than 40 years and throughout that time has shown passion and commitment to improving services and support for the Borough’s residents.

During his time at the council, Peter was instrumental in creating and overseeing the Council’s award winning Reablement Services and the LiveWell Dementia Hub.

Staff at the LiveWell Dementia Hub have been shortlisted in the Team of the Year category.

The LiveWell Dementia Hub is the one-stop-shop for dementia in Stockton, and the team who work there are on hand to provide a wide range of information and support to those affected and their families.

Working hard, in collaboration with partners from a wide range of health and voluntary agencies, the staff help people access the support each person needs to live well with dementia.

The staff are praised by families using the service for their helpful, problem solving approach and for providing a ‘safe haven’.

Adult safeguarding worker Caroline McCormack has been shortlisted for the Newly Qualified Adult Social Worker category.

Caroline is a committed professional at the start of her career who works hard to protect some of the Borough’s most vulnerable residents.

She has made a real difference to the lives of the people she is supporting – helping people feel safe in their homes and has been commended by colleagues and partners in the Police and NHS.

Stockton Council’s cabinet member for adult social care and health, councillor Jim Beall, said: “With only 93 finalists chosen nationally across 16 categories it’s quite a coup that our staff have made the shortlist in three separate categories.

“These respected awards acknowledge the best in adult social care and Peter, Caroline and all the staff at the LiveWell Hub have all been recognised for making a positive difference to peoples’ lives, their commitment to public service and professionalism.

“I wish them the best of luck at the awards ceremony on 30 November.”
