Darlington has plenty to shout about as the town is set to host the 2019 Loyal Company of Town Criers British Championships on Saturday, August 3, on High Row from 11am–3pm.
The event will see town criers from across the country gather to shout out in a celebration of what they do and to determine the best in Britain.
The town criers will be providing a loud and colourful spectacle throughout the day starting at 11am when proclamations about the home towns will be made from the Market Cross.
Darlington’s Markets Past and Present is the afternoon topic for the 2pm event next to Joseph Pease statue.
The criers have free poetic license to interpret this subject as they see fit, so expect to see a range of proclamations.
Cllr Paul Howell, cabinet member for Leisure and Local Environment, said: “I am delighted that Darlington is hosting this year’s Town Crier Competition, and I know that it will be a fantastic day out for all of the family.
“As the afternoon topic concerns our markets, I am confident that this event will bring interest in our town from visitors and we can showcase our future plans for the Victorian Market to encourage them to become regular visitors.”
